Vimukthi Jayasundara

Vimukthi Jayasundara was born in 1977 in Ratnapura (Sri Lanka). After finishing his black-and-white documentary THE LAND OF SILENCE about the victims of civil war, which participated in several international film festivals (Marseille, Rotterdam, Berlin), Vimukthi Jayasundara studied in France at the National Studio for Contemporary Arts - Le Fresnoy. He was selected in 2003 by the Cinefondation of the Cannes Film Festival to participate in their residency program.

His directorial debut, THE FORSAKEN LAND (Sulanga enu Pinisa), was awarded the Camera d'Or for the best first feature film at the 58th Cannes International Film Festival in 2005 (Un Certain Regard). BETWEEN TWO WORLDS (Ahasin Wetei) - his second feature film - has been officially selected for the Competition section at the 66th Venice International Film Festival in 2009 and has been shown in about 100 festivals around the world. Since 2005, Vimukhti lives between Paris and Colombo. "CHATRAK" (aka Mushrooms) is his third feature film.
