PRODUCTION NOTES

The Invention of Love is an extraordinary story, both on and off screen. Unprecedented obstacles during production dictated the course of events. Maria Kwiatkowsky, the main actress, died after 23 days of shooting, leaving behind an almost finished film. After the initial shock, director Lola Randl, took up the challenge and re-wrote her script. She created additional characters, filmed new scenes, re-edited and completely re-invented „The Invention of Love“ using existing scenes, combined with her new material. The resulting film is both, tender and unyielding, a film showing the passion, tragedy, failure and success of filmmaking, while staying true to the original plot. – A film that really happened!

Pol Cruchten

Pol Cruchten is a Luxembourg director and producer, who finished his diploma at the École Supérieure d’Études Cinématographiques in Paris in 1987. His first short movie was “Somewhere in Europe” (1989) with Howard Vernon. In 1992 his film “Hochzaitsnuecht” was screened in Cannes in the category Un Certain Regard. As a many-sided talent he did the chronicle “Black Dju” (1996) with Philippe Leotard, Richard Courcet and Cesaria Evora and also followed the call of Hollywood and did the movie “Boys on the Run” (2001) with Ron Perlman (Hellboy). His love for Luxembourg movies made him an active producer of movies like “W” by Luc Feit, “Le Manie-Tout” by Georges Le Piouffle, “Universal Love” by Thomas Woschitz or “Josh” by Govinda Van Maele.
