Synopsis

Joschi is a film specialist, so to speak. He is no film critic, not a filmmaker, but an expert on film through his long work experience. So it’s about a very different, though quite in-depth view at the medium film. The documentary accompanies Joschi over a long period of time – from the set to the premiere of the movie. Joschi develops his views on individual projects, but also on the scene at all: From his story to HISTORY of AUSTRIAN FILM.

Statement of the Director: „I think that the project „Joschi and the Stars“ is an unbelievable chance to tell about film and film production in an unusual, original and entertaining way. This movie should show how much highly specialized work the medium film includes and how important efficient funding systems for the national films are. This should be told without moralizing observations. It is a perspective coming from the inside and from the outside, but at the same time it keeps an critical view on the happenings, because the observer is not part of them.“

The idea for this documentary is based on Josef Deininger alias „Joschi“ and his unique story of life. In 1985 Joschi started his career as a taxi driver, but soon he specialized on the film- and music business in Austria. He says he never found the ideal job – he used to be an accountant- but at this one at least he gets to meet interesting people, like Michael Haneke, Christoph Walt, Catherine Deneuve, John Malkovich etc. It took two years to get Joschi attached to the project and one year to shoot and edit the movie, but with great success.

Klaus Maria Brandauer studied music and drama at the university in Stuttgart. He fell in love with stage acting and therefore didn’t like to work in movies except for two small parts in Top Secret (1972) and Októberi vasárnap (1979). This changed when Hungarian director István Szabó gave him a leading part in Mephisto (1981). Brandauer received the actors award in Cannes and that opened door to international films.
